September is when Golden relaxes. Buffalo Bill Days have come and gone, and the fine arts festival is over. Temperatures moderate. September's average high temperature is a perfect 74 degrees, but it can be nippy too. September is when Golden typically has its first autumn freeze. October is crisper, but daily highs still average 65 degrees. October is also when Golden usually sees its first snowfall.

Autumn is a perfect time to visit Golden's popular Colorado Railroad Museum

The pathways on the Colorado School of Mines campus fill with students, and the rhythm of the fall semester takes hold at this world renowned institution. On Saturday afternoons, the Orediggers' fight song drifts across town, as Mines football returns to Campbell Field.

Along Clear Creek the rushing rapids of early summer are supplanted by more leisurely flows perfect for a float on an innertube. Evenings are cooler, but they're still warm enough to ensure that the Golden Cruise on the last Tuesday of September and October will be well attended by bicylists, and the Golden Super Cruise on the first Saturday of each month will have plenty of classic cars. Visitors can buy the fall harvest at the Farmers' Market through the first Saturday in October. The season of Indian Summer closes with yet another Golden tradition, the Downtown Merchants Association's Halloween Crazy Days, when young and old haunt downtown Golden to collect candy and community spirit in historic downtown Golden.

September and October are perfect months to enjoy Golden's many hiking and biking trails. The sun relents, and the colors of fall settle along the trails and paths.
